Use AI to scrape website information and other useful details.

The rise of Social Media will have a lasting legacy on how we use the internet. It would also be responsible for helping to change and reshape the world of open-source intelligence, giving new avenues for analysis as well as a rapid expansion of available data.

While this would help broaden the scope of OSINT collection, there’s no denying that the propagation of disinformation would play a part in hindering these advancements. In fact, social media would grow so rapidly that, prior to the evolution of AI, correctly managing gathered data was an ever-growing role that was becoming far more complex.

Thanks to the evolution of artificial intelligence and machine learning, though, this task has become more manageable, and while AI isn’t without its flaws, one thing it is pretty good at is assessing and analysing online information.

Now, rather than manually reviewing this information ourselves, we can feed it into properly configured AI systems to help make the most of our time. We can also use these systems to analyse other information as well. Today, we’ll be looking at the role the humble domain plays, as well as some of the actionable intel we add to broaden our scope of information.

The Relevance Of Domains

The Cybersecurity of today has little in common with the cybersecurity of yesterday, and open-source intelligence has been a key pillar involved in that change. It’s helped to change the cyber landscape, giving us fraud detection tools and helping to identify domain-based threats.

The domain plays a key role in many modern threats, with scam networks using domains to gain legitimacy, while phishing scams rely on the usage of domains for the same reasons.

It’s little known outside the tech communities, but the global WannaCry attack was stopped in its tracks thanks to the usage of domain-based intelligence. The code would use domain resolution to identify sandboxes. If it resolved, the malware would assume it was sandboxed and would cease its attack, a fact that was exploited in mitigation of the event. So, it’s fair to say that understanding the types of intel we can gather from domains is fairly important.

Types Of Intelligence

While it varies according to need, there’s a significant amount of intel that we can use for various purposes. This can include website analysis, including headers and projects like Wayback Machine, fingerprinting and malicious domain detection.

We can also use LLMs to help with sentiment analysis or check and assess the content within a website for interesting information like contacts, email addresses or associated domains.

It’s worth mentioning here that results, as always, depend on the purpose and intent. So if you’re a hobby-level analyst, you might find the usage of a tool like Grok or ChatGPT to be adequate for your needs. However, those of you who may do this professionally or operate on a larger scale will probably find benefit in configuring a customised LLM to perform your own functions.

A Word On Frameworks

It’s 2025, and OSINT is by no means new and as such, there’s a variety of frameworks for carrying out investigations in the public arena. Some of these are prior to the evolution of AI, while others involve the usage of the aforementioned customised LLMs.

It’s often worth taking the time to review some of these frameworks for pointers and useful information to help with your own inquiries. The landscape is constantly changing, however, the community is typically pretty helpful when it comes to sharing and dissemenating information.

You’ll find Discord channels, private blogs and all manner of commercial resources posting regular updates. Joining these puts you right in the middle of a community with common interests, and some of these channels can be VERY interesting during times of crisis.

Stay On Your Game

For many, the rapid rise of AI has led to concern over the role of humans in future societies. And while AI will continue to grow in intelligence, it’s going to take some time for this to play out entirely. Until this occurs, the most productive people will be the ones using a mix of human ingenuity paired with AI’s efficiency.

It’s well known that AI will often hallucinate facts or provide incorrect data in certain circumstances. Human intervention and analysis of AI responses, paired with correcting prompting, helps to mitigate these issues and lean into the usage of AI as a productivity tool.

AI is an incredible tool for analysis and brainstorming when used correctly. It’s up to us humans to learn how to leverage the strengths of these types of systems while mitigating their weaknesses.
