Where Do Numbers Live?

Numbers are strange entities. You cannot touch them, yet almost nothing works without them: neither bridges, nor music, nor the orbits of planets. Since antiquity, people have been arguing about the exact same thing: are numbers discovered or invented?
This debate has two powerful poles.

The First Pole: Numbers Are Discovered

The Pythagoreans saw in numbers not just a convenient tool, but a hidden framework of the world. The universe, as they felt, rests on numbers like a house on invisible beams. Numbers are not invented — they are discovered. Just like a new land is found, one that existed long before the first geographical discoveries. Plato developed this intuition into a whole philosophical system: there is a world of ideas, and visible reality only partially reflects it. To this day, many mathematicians feel they do not invent theorems, but rather break through the visible world to reach them — like archaeologists unearthing an ancient city hidden underground.

The Second Pole: Numbers Are Invented

But there was another view. Aristotle thought otherwise: numbers do not exist separately from physical things — they arise in the mind when the counting, comparison, and distinction of objects begin. Later, this line of thought was picked up by thinkers who doubted the independent life of abstractions. "Three" is not an entity in eternity, but a convenient name for a recurring order in nature. It is not numbers that hover above reality — it is the mind that knows how to gather the visible world into elegant mathematical systems.

What About Practice?

Practice, as usual, remains perfectly calm. Airplanes fly with the exact same reliability for both those who believe in the objectivity of numbers and those who consider them an artful work of the mind. Mathematics works in both cases. The point lies elsewhere: "three" is neither a mere word nor a physical thing, but that very unchanging essence binding different objects together — even if no one is looking at them at this exact moment.
