When AI Decides Who Dies, Who’s Responsible?
AI autonomous weapons represent technology that can severely impact or end innocent lives when in the hands of irresponsible nations seeking to cause fear in pursuit of their foreign policy objectives. Like any powerful tool in nations’ arsenals, they can be used to protect and defend or as a means of violating international and moral laws. It comes down to those who will employ them.
Lauren Hawker Zafer and I had an insightful discussion on this disturbing topic on the Redefining AI podcast.
It is a problem we are seeing today in conflicts, and it will be a growing problem as vile governments seek to target civilians, non-combatants, and humanitarian protected targets in new ways, while trying to hide behind claims of deniability.
The international community must define red-lines, make it clear that such actions are unacceptable, and that there will be consequences.
