Over the last few years, small-scale design programs have become easier than ever to implement. However, while manufacturing your own boards and hardware can be a rewarding process, it can come with some difficulties that can make it less viable to deal with in a home environment.

This can be a messy and, at times, dangerous job. So, beginners might find it easier to simply outsource the manufacturing process elsewhere. To do this properly, you’ll need someone with a reputation for quality products and good services.

Naturally, when the time came to build our CubeSat Simulator, our partner of choice was PCBWay. It might surprise you to learn, though, that PCBWay doesn’t just produce circuit boards. They have a full manufacturing facility that includes 3D printing, CNC machines, injection moulding facilities and a support team that can help you resolve any problems that you might find during production.

Let’s go check it out!

PCBWay Background

Based in China, the company started small more than a decade ago by offering custom, small-scale PCB manufacturing. Rather than producing things on a broad scale, the company aimed to support the small to medium maker industry by overhauling the production process to make it simpler and more efficient to design custom projects.

Over the years, the company has grown to develop a reputation for providing quality products at a price point that suits most budgets. While you might expect this to be a slow and cumbersome process as part of the design phase, the reality is that production is fast, easy to track and comes with plenty of design support.

As the company would grow, so too would its list of services. No longer just a circuit board manufacturer, PCBWay would make the move towards the Factory Floor, being a one-stop manufacturing and design shop while aiming to service the global market. Currently serving more than 200 countries globally, it’s fair to say that the company has more than achieved that goal.

They’ve also made great strides toward growing and developing the maker community, with fun promotions like the annual badge contest that lets you show off your skills and a loyalty program that gives you small perks with each completed design.

The Factory Floor

What this gives makers is an easily accessible one-stop shop with full design support, where your wildest concepts are capable of being taken from a mere idea to a fully functional prototype.

Maybe you’d like a stainless steel, 3D printed toothpick dispenser built using the factory’s metal printing equipment?

Or, perhaps you’d like to do an Iron Man cosplay with a fully functional, CNC-manufactured helmet that looks the part.

It’s not just novelty projects, though. A quick glimpse at the automated PCB assembly machine shows that they are more than capable of assembling the most modern projects at a rate that some non-electronic folk might find a little startling.

This is cutting-edge manufacturing technology done right, and it’s available to anyone who might need it. Our CubeSat simulator boards went from the initial production stage to being on the workbench just two weeks later, with manufacturing quality that was on point.

The Support Process

There’s no denying that the hardware is both pretty cool and cutting-edge.

But in a maker’s world where we too can access some pretty cool design hardware, you’ll need more than that to really shine.

Having used the manufacturing and design services, one of the brightest features of the company is the ease with which the design process happens. No longer is there a complicated design process with days of back and forth while you iron out the problems and get ready for production.

It’s about as simple as it gets. Upon booking, you will:

  1. Upload your design (or use a pre-existing one from the database), then
  2. Be allocated a team member to track your order.
  3. Once payment is complete, it will move through to the design process. You can track this through the web portal and set email notifications for speedy updates.
  4. Your team member will help identify and solve any problems you might find before production.
  5. Final confirmation will occur at which point your product has been produced! From there, it’s shipping, and you’re ready to go!

Once your project is complete, you’ll want to leave a review and ensure your details remain current in the customer portal. This means you’ll get access to regular design programs and competitions, loyalty rewards as a returning customer and even referral rewards for onboarding new projects. There’s also a dedicated community on X where you can share your latest designs.

Get Ready

Here at Radio Hackers, we don’t just want to give you the information you need to learn and build, we want to make the hardware freely available as well.

While Radio can be great fun, the selection process for hardware can be a little daunting for beginners, while for many, the price point of particular products is always an ongoing concern.

In 2026, we aim to make that process just a little bit easier by teaming up with PCBway to produce affordable and accessible SDR and WiFi hardware that leverages open source design where possible.

Keep an eye on this publication. Exciting things are starting to happen. In the meantime, if you’d like to build something yourself, contact the team and see if they can’t give you a helping hand to get started.
