zkSync is a Layer-2 scaling solution that aims to increase the scalability of decentralized applications (DApps). High transaction fees and low transaction speeds experienced on main chains like Ethereum can limit the adoption of blockchain technology. Layer-2 scaling solutions are designed to solve or mitigate these problems.

zkSync is a solution that offers scaled processing capacity using zero-knowledge technologies. Zero-knowledge technologies are cryptographic protocols that allow one party to use information without proving to the other party that it has that information. zkSync provides scalability as a Layer-2 solution, while securely interacting with the main chain.

Technically, zkSync uses a Layer-2 scaling technique called zkRollup. zkRollup is a method where transactions are aggregated in the Layer-2 chain instead of the main chain and only the necessary proofs are sent to the main chain. This significantly reduces transaction costs and processing times.
The main components of zkSync are:

  1. Data Partitioning (Data Availability Layer): This is the layer where transactions take place and are verified. This layer contains detailed data about transactions.
  2. Proof Partitioning (ZK Rollup Chain): This is the layer that proves that transactions have occurred and are valid. Proofs are sent to the main chain with zero-knowledge proofs.

The advantages of zkSync can be:

  1. Lower transaction fees: Unlike trading on the main chain, transactions on zkSync can take place at a lower cost.
  2. Faster transaction confirmations: Layer-2 solutions improve the user experience by confirming transactions faster.
  3. Scalability: With zkRollup, thousands of transactions can be aggregated into a Layer-2 chain and forwarded to the main chain with a single proof.


ZkSync is a protocol based on the ZK-Rollup technology developed by Matter Labs to address Ethereum's scaling issues such as low transaction efficiency. The main purpose of the protocol, the first version of which was released in June 2020,

  3. To create a financial product that can reach a general audience.

ZkSync developers: ZkSync is being developed by a team called Matter Labs. The team includes Steve Newcomb, who founded Powerset, which was acquired by Microsoft and later became part of Microsoft Bing.
Next to him is Anthony Rose, Head of Engineering, who led the engineering teams at SpaceX for several years, developing software for Falcon, Dragon and Starlink.
Does the project have a token? The project does not yet have a native token, but the developers have made it clear on the tokenomics page that a token will be created for use in staking transactions and to act as a validator.
Supporters of the project: When we say what is ZkSync, we see that the project is backed by several major organizations. These include well-known organizations such as Binace Labs, Ethereum Foundation and Coinbase.
The company also raised $2 million in September 2019 and $6 million in February 2021 from crypto companies such as Binance, Aave, Curve and Coinbase Ventures. In November 2021, it raised another $50 million from venture capital funds such as a16z, Dragonfly and Placeholder. In January 2022, the company is looking to raise another $200 million from BitDAO.

zkSync Compatible Bridges

Blockchain bridges are infrastructures designed to facilitate the fluid transfer of tokens between different platforms, synchronizing the creation and registration processes. These bridges are highly valued by developers as they encourage faster processing. Some zkSync compatible bridges include:
zkSync Portal: This trusted protocol uses zero-knowledge proofs to enable scalable and cost-effective transactions on Ethereum. The protocol keeps all assets under a smart contract on the main network while performing calculations and storing data off-chain.

The origins of zkSync

Matter Labs, a German startup, launched zero-knowledge aggregations in 2020 to increase Ethereum's scaling capacity. The zkSync project started in 2019 and ended with the launch of the first version, called zkSync 1.0, in 2020.
zkSync 1.0: The launch of zkSync 1.0 marked the beginning of the journey, introducing technology capable of processing up to 3,000 transactions per second (TPS). As demand for higher network throughput grew, Matter Labs developed and released an improved version.
zkSync 2.0: The next release, zkSync 2.0, brought the zkEVM testnet, making zkSync the zk-Rollup pioneer supporting native Ethereum smart contracts. Compared to the previous version, version 2.0 zkEVM infrastructure offers significant improvements in performance and capacity.
Matter Labs introduced zk-Porter, an innovative sharding approach to further expand throughput and throughput on Ethereum. With zk-Porter, estimates show that throughput can increase from 3,000 TPS to an impressive 20,000 TPS.
