Why Your Bitcoin Profit Number Is Probably Wrong (And How to Fix It)

Every crypto trader has done this at least once: checked the price of Bitcoin, compared it to what they paid, and mentally calculated a
profit number that felt good — only to find their actual wallet balance told a different story.

Here's the gap almost nobody accounts for: fees.
Say you bought 0.5 BTC at $50,000 and sold it at $65,000. On paper, that's a $7,500 gain. Simple subtraction, right? Except most
exchanges charge a percentage fee on both the buy and the sell side. Even a modest 0.1% fee doesn't sound like much — until you
realize it's being deducted twice, on two different (and growing) dollar amounts.

The real formula like this:
Net Profit = (Exit Price × Quantity) − (Entry Price × Quantity) − Fees
Fees = (Buy Cost + Sell Value) × Fee %
On a $32,500 buy and $32,500 in fees exposure at 0.1%, you're looking at roughly $65 in fees alone — not life-changing, but not nothing
either. And that's a single trade. Active traders making dozens of trades a month can lose hundreds of dollars to fees they never explicitly
calculated, simply because the "gross" number felt accurate enough.
This matters even more once you factor in currency conversion. If you're tracking profit in a local currency rather than USD, that's a
second layer of calculation most people skip entirely — they eyeball a rough conversion and call it done.
The fix isn't complicated, it's just a habit most traders haven't built yet: always calculate net profit, not gross difference. Before you
celebrate (or panic) about a trade, subtract the fees from both sides and see what's actually left.
If you'd rather not do this math by hand every time, I built a free tool for exactly this — Trades Checker calculates net profit/loss
including fees, across Bitcoin and other major coins, with results in both USD and local currency. No signup required.
