Today I will talk about technology and health, which have come to the fore with the advancement of technology. In other words, I will explain the term Digital Health, a new treatment approach, and its relationship with health.

DIGITAL HEALTH

With the rapid advancement of technology, there are also major changes in the healthcare sector. Digital health refers to the use of information and communication technologies in medicine and other health fields to manage diseases and health risks posed by diseases and to promote healthy living. Digital health has a broad scope; It includes the use of wearable devices, mobile health, telehealth, health information technologies, and telemedicine (Ronquillo et al., 2023) .

The reasons for the rapid spread of digital health are as follows:

  • - Facilitating access to health services
  • - Reducing any inefficiency that may occur in the healthcare system
  • - Increasing the quality of care given to patients
  • - Reducing the cost of health services
  • - Providing more personalized health care for patients (Ronquillo et al., 2023)

The goals of digital health products and services are to:

  • -Increasing the quality of maintenance and service results
  • -To improve population health
  • -To improve patient experience
  • -To improve the experience of physicians and other non-physician service providers.
  • -Eliminating health inequalities (Ronquillo et al., 2023)

Categories of Digital Health Products and Services

  1. Remote sensing and wearable devices
  2. Telemedicine and health information
  3. Data analytics and intelligence , predictive modeling
  4. Tools to change health and wellness behavior
  5. Digitized health record platforms
  6. Patient-physician-patient portals
  7. Decision Support Systems
  8. Views (Ronquillo et al., 2023)

Digital health technologies provide benefits such as increasing the interaction between people receiving health services and health professionals, increasing the orientation of people other than health professionals to preventive health activities, and increasing patients' compliance with the normal course of treatment (Lupton, 2013) . However, besides the innovations brought by digital health, there are also some risks. There are especially concerns about the privacy and security of personal health data. Therefore, it is extremely important to comply with security standards when developing and using digital health technologies.

Digital health, or the use of digital technologies for health, has become a prominent application area for using routine and innovative information-communication technologies to meet health needs. The term digital health is based on the term eHealth, which is defined as "the use of information and communication technologies to support health and health-related areas" (WHO, 2019) . Mobile health ( mHealth ) is a subset of eHealth and is defined as “the use of mobile wireless technologies for public health” ( WHO, 2019) . More recently, the term digital health has been introduced as "a term that encompasses both eHealth ( which includes m- Health ) and emerging big data fields such as genomics and the use of advanced computing sciences for artificial intelligence " (WHO, 2019) .

Digital health has attracted much attention from the medical and public health community, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where mobile communications have opened a new channel to overcome geographic access problems of healthcare. More than a thousand digital health deployments have been recorded since 2008, representing some of the digital health uses that may exist but have not been formally documented. Governments, donors and multilateral institutions have also recognized the potentially transformative role of digital technologies for health system strengthening. In a joint document published in 2015, the World Bank Group, the United States Agency for International Development, and the World Health Organization (WHO) advocated “using the digital revolution to scale up health interventions and engage civil society” (WHO, 2019) .

E Health

E-Health, which is among the common health technology issues of our age, provides great convenience for patients to access their personal medical data, to determine the treatment to be applied to them, and to doctors in the diagnosis and treatment process. There are many expressions that try to explain e-Health.

Eysenbach explained e-Health as "a new field where health services and information come together through medicine, public health and internet-related technologies." If we look at it holistically, the expression e-Health does not only express technical progress, but also as a mind that thinks together in a global network in order to improve health services at local and global levels through information and communication tools.

The 10 E's of e-Health:
  1. Efficiency,
  2. Improving the Quality of Care,
  3. Evidence-Based,
  4. Incentive,
  5. Education,
  6. Consumer and Patient Empowerment,
  7. Providing Information,
  8. Expanding the Scope of Health Care,
  9. Ethics
  10. Equity (Eysenbach, 2001)

Toygar 2018 declares e-Health as a new branch of health in the informatics era. E-Health does not aim to exclude doctors and other health professionals from the treatment process, but rather to increase the efficiency, speed and timeliness of health professionals (Toygar et al., 2016). The internet, which contains a lot of information, enables individuals to access health-related information and to determine the health status of the person to a certain extent and to arrange and control doctor appointments. For this purpose, e-Health interventions provide support for individuals to increase their education level in the field of health, access disease-curing services, and improve their own health status individually. E-Health interventions help to increase the progress of the health field, where service delivery is provided with limited resources (Toygar et al., 2016).

In my next article, I will talk about mobile applications, one of the usage areas of digital health. Thank you in advance for reading my articles with patience and dedication .
