Mafia-style organizations "reportedly have developed close connections with the government and other politicians," according to the Global Organized Crime Index 2023. According to the Global Organized Crime Index, Turkey was rated 14th globally and 6th in Asia in organized crime in 2023, with a score of 7.03 out of 10, up from 6.89 in 2021.
Turkey ranks second in Asia, behind Myanmar, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, and Syria, and has a better average score than any country in Europe. It performed very well in human trafficking and smuggling, scoring 8 and 9, respectively, in arms trafficking (8.5), heroin trade (8.5), state-embedded actors (9) and mafia-style groups (8.5).

"A significant number of mafia-style groups based on the traditional mafia system operate in Turkey." Those who remain in the nation are alleged to have formed tight relationships with the government and other officials, rendering them untouchable to law enforcement or the legal system until they fall out of favor due to their acts," according to the article.
It went on to say: "There is a widespread perception that enforcement is uneven in practice, with preferential treatment given to supporters of the ruling party and the president." Criminal scandals, combined with a currency crisis, have produced significant issues about the government's legitimacy, reducing its public support."

It went on to say: "Recent allegations point to a close relationship between the Turkish government and organized crime organizations." Government openness and accountability are poor, with the lack of transparency becoming increasingly obvious in the aftermath of the continuing financial crisis."
