Discovery of America

The discovery of America refers to the first encounter between the indigenous peoples of the Americas and Europeans, led by Christopher Columbus, in 1492. Columbus, an Italian explorer, was sponsored by the Spanish monarchy to find a new sea route to Asia, which he believed could be reached by sailing west across the Atlantic.

Columbus and his crew set sail on August 3, 1492, and after a journey of more than two months, they sighted land on October 12. The land they had reached was an island in the present-day Bahamas, which Columbus named San Salvador. He continued to explore the surrounding islands, including Cuba and Hispaniola, and encountered the Taino people, who were the indigenous inhabitants of those islands.

Columbus believed that he had reached the outskirts of Asia, and he referred to the indigenous people he encountered as "Indians." However, it later became clear that he had in fact discovered a new continent, which he named America after the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci.

The discovery of America had a profound impact on the world, leading to the colonization of the Americas by Europeans and the forced displacement and genocide of many indigenous peoples. It also sparked a period of global exploration and colonization, with European powers vying for control of new territories and resources.
