In today's world, the importance of the English language as a global means of communication is increasing day by day. However, many people in some countries, despite mastering the grammar rules and vocabulary of English, find themselves unable to speak or express themselves. There are several fundamental reasons for this, and to overcome this issue, please continue reading for my suggestions.

Challenges and Barriers:

  1. Education System: In some country, English education often focuses on grammar rules with little emphasis on developing practical speaking skills. While developed countries adopt the "Communicative English Teaching" approach, "developing countries" tend to apply a translation-based teaching system. This is a significant mistake. Students who lack the perspective of thinking in English may struggle.
  2. Environmental Factors: Outside of education, individuals in non-English speaking countries unfortunately have limited opportunities to speak English in their daily lives. In an environment where the language is not practiced regularly, the learning process may slow down.
  3. Lack of Confidence: Many individuals are influenced by past negative experiences related to learning English. If you were laughed at by friends or scolded by a teacher for mispronouncing a word in school, or if you have been trying to learn English for years without progress, you may experience learned helplessness. Fear of making mistakes and hesitancy to speak English become significant barriers.

What Can You Do?

  1. Develop a Practice Habit: The most effective way to learn English is through constant practice. It can be beneficial to find language exchange partners for daily conversation practice or participate in language exchange activities.
  2. Use Language Exchange Apps: Language exchange applications are one of the advantages of modern technology. These apps allow you to engage in language exchange with people worldwide, helping improve your language skills.
  3. Self-Talk Practice: Developing a habit of speaking English when alone can boost confidence. You can ask yourself questions or practice speaking on a specific topic. Stand in front of a mirror, ask and answer questions, and try naming everyday objects in English. Translate the language of your phone, your television, your computer, your air fryer – in short, the language of all your electronic devices at home – into English. The more exposure you have to the language, the more comfortable you will become in speaking.
  4. Explore English Films and Music: English movies and music aid in understanding the natural use of the language and expanding your vocabulary. Using subtitles can enhance your comprehension skills.

In conclusion, improving English speaking skills may seem challenging and time-consuming, but it is achievable. With continuous practice, effective learning materials, and a positive language learning environment, we can all speak and understand English more effectively. Believe in yourself; you can succeed.
