10 Psychology Tricks to Playfully Mess with People's Minds


We've all been there - a conversation lulls and you want to spice things up. Or maybe you just want to harmlessly prank a friend. Psychology offers some fun and ethical tricks to innocuously play with people's heads. Let's liven things up!
1. The Centerpiece Effect - Simply move the centerpiece on a table a few inches to the right or left. When your dinner companions sit down, this subtle asymmetry will create mild tension without anyone knowing why. You'll chuckle inside at their unease over something so small.
2. Guess Who? - When a friend approaches in a crowd, look over their shoulder, wave and smile, and call out a wrong name. Your friend will spin around in confusion, giving you a good laugh. Then apologetically correct yourself. A tiny dose of bewilderment brightens the day.
3. One-Upmanship - Casually tell an outrageous and obviously fictitious story from your past. When your friend tries to gently top you, act completely convinced of the truth of your tall tale. Their escalating attempts to outdo your fiction can lead to hilarious results.
4. Question Their Questions - The next time someone asks you a question, respond by playfully questioning their question. For example, "Why do you ask why I wore this today?" This momentarily puzzles them giving you the upper hand.
5. Repeat Repeat - When conversing, nonchalantly echo a friend's last few words verbatim before responding. Try repeating just 3-5 words while keeping a straight face. Their confused expression when you copy them makes for some harmless hijinks.
6. Lose to Win - Challenge a boastful pal to an activity like darts or video games where you possess secret prowess. Deliberately lose while appearing disappointed. Their glee will set up you up to double their humiliation when you reveal your abilities in a rematch.
7. Scratch That - Tell someone about an incredible life event then pause and slowly say "Or wait...maybe that never happened and I dreamt it?" Let this sink in, then laughingly assure them of course it really happened. The creeping uncertainty in their eyes produces a few seconds of fun confusion.
8. Did I Say That? - During a conversation casually interject "Wait did I already tell you guys about the time..." then when met with the expected "No, what?" act surprised and say "Huh I could have sworn I just told you about the time I saw my neighbor get arrested." The perplexity you conjured entertains you while keeping your friends on their toes.
9. Déjà vu - Start telling a story to a friend then stop suddenly and stare at them wide-eyed. When they ask what's up, excitedly exclaim "Whoa, major déjà vu! I could sworn we've had this exact conversation before. Have you been here with these people hearing about when I..." Watch them spiral down a déjà vu rabbit hole searching their memory.
10. Freeze Frame - Set up your phone to record video inconspicuously. When a conversation lulls, secretly press record and mime hitting pause while making a silly face. Your friends will be confused and laugh nervously assuming you hit pause to lighten the mood. You'll capture authentic awkward expressions for a great laugh later!
