My First Encounter with an Animal: The Story of a Little Turtle
Today became a day that carved a special place in my life. Today, for the first time in my life, I saw an animal so closely, touched it, and felt it. This may sound very ordinary to hear, but only someone who has never had a pet in their life will understand how special this feeling really is.
My younger brother brought a small turtle from the pond today. I had told him, "Bring it outside, I want to see it." He kept my word. He stood in front of me holding a tiny turtle in his hands. To be honest, at the first moment I was a bit surprised. So small, so calm, so harmless a creature. Its eyes were small, but it seemed to be saying so many things. There was a hard shell on its back, mud smeared on its body, and slowly it was crawling. I kept staring.
Deep inside, a strange feeling was working within me. Joy, curiosity, and a little tenderness, all mixed into one strange emotion. For the first time in my life, I felt the existence of an animal so closely. It was not speaking any words, but its silent presence seemed to fill my mind. I understood that love for animals or affection toward animals is not just words, it is a feeling. Those who keep pets perhaps feel this every day. But for me, this small moment today was the first.
While I was looking at the turtle, it began to seem to me that this small creature is so patient. In the water of the pond it was perhaps swimming, and suddenly it was lifted and brought to an unknown place. Even then it did not get scared. It is walking calmly on the ground. This calm nature of it fascinated me. How restless we humans are. We become disappointed at small problems. But this tiny creature lives its small life with so much patience.
Looking at my younger brother's face, it seemed he was also happy. He was perhaps thinking, "I was able to show my brother something new." But he did not know that this little turtle was not just an animal to me. It was the first animal of my life, the first experience, the first feeling.
I told him, "Release it back into the pond." Because I know the real place of this turtle is water. We can watch it for a while, but keeping it confined is not right. An animal's freedom belongs to it. We humans often keep animals confined in the name of love. But true love is to return it to its own place.
This event today taught me many things. First, joy can be found in small things. A little turtle, a little moment, these are the real beauty of life. Second, we should have sympathy for animals. They are weaker than us, so caring for them is our responsibility. Third, every first experience of life is important for us. If I had not seen the turtle today, I would never have received this feeling.
I know, reading this writing, someone may think, "What is the big deal in this." But to me it is very big. Because today I did not just see a turtle, I saw a new side of life. I saw that love, tenderness, and a sense of responsibility are not limited only to humans. These also exist among animals, and we must awaken them within us.
In the end I will only say this, whenever a new experience comes in life, accept it. Maybe it is small, maybe it is insignificant, but it can change your life. That is what happened to me today. A little turtle, a little day, but a big lesson.
