Can Irish sea moss benefit my health?

A question I have been asking myself. I will be honest I haven't yet tried it but lets take a look at the benefits, after looking into this I am pretty sure I am going to give it a go!

What exactly is Irish sea moss?

Sea moss, also known as Chondrus crispus, is an edible seaweed that thrives in coastal regions of the Atlantic. Despite its misleading name, sea moss comes in various colours like green, yellow, red, brown, and black, with the red variety most commonly known as 'Irish moss'.

This seaweed is not only a culinary thickening agent called carrageenan but also a rich source of nutrients that are often hard to find. Sea moss, or Irish moss, is predominantly used in supplement form for its health benefits rather than as a cooking ingredient. This versatile seaweed provides a range of advantages, such as supporting thyroid health by offering iodine and tyrosine, promoting gut health by acting as a prebiotic, enhancing immunity with phytochemicals, aiding in blood sugar balance through its fibre content, and supporting heart health with its omega-3 fatty acids.

Is Irish sea moss good for everyone?

Sea moss is particularly beneficial for those following a plant-based diet due to its rich iodine content. However, consuming large amounts can have adverse effects, especially for pregnant women or individuals on specific medications. While studies show promising health effects from consuming sea moss, more research is necessary to fully understand its impact on human health

What are the health benefits of irish sea moss?

Supporting thyroid health

Our thyroid needs a number of nutrients in order to function properly, one of the most important is iodine as well as amino acid and tyrosine, all of which can be found in Irish sea moss.

Supports gut health

Sea moss acts as a prebiotic for beneficial gut microbes. This is because sea moss is rich in dietary fibre. Fuelling the gut bacteria helps to create the best environment for the microbes which are super important for our overall health and well being.

Supports immunity

Sea moss has an enviable defence mechanism because it has had to evolve to survive the harsh conditions of the coastal waters where it comes from. Because of this, sea moss is rich in phytochemicals which, when consumed, provide immune modulation and improved immune response.

Improves blood sugar control

Sea moss contains compounds carotenoid and fucoxanthin which help to reduce insulin resistance and supports better blood sugar control. Studies have shown that because of this sea moss can potentially reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. The high fibre in sea moss also helps slow the speed of digestion which is helpful to control blood sugar levels.

Supports heart health

Sea moss is a great source of omega 3 fatty acid. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for the heart and cardiovascular system. Studies have also shown sea moss may act as a blood thinner, improving cholesterol balance and therefore reducing the risk of heart disease.

. In conclusion, sea moss is a nutritious addition to your diet, offering a variety of vitamins, minerals, and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Its ability to support thyroid health, gut health, immunity, blood sugar control, and heart health makes it a valuable super food with impressive health benefits.
