Apes, our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom, hold a special place in our imagination. Diversity in the Ape Family Tree

Lesser Apes (Hylobatidae): These acrobatic specialists, also known as gibbons, are known for their impressive brachiation skills – swinging through trees using their long arms. With 20 species spread across four genera, gibbons are all native to Asia. They are smaller and lighter than great apes, with a distinct vocal repertoire that includes loud calls used to defend territories and attract mates.

Great Apes (Hominidae): This group is further divided into four subfamilies: Homininae (humans and extinct hominins), Ponginae (orangutans), Gorillinae (gorillas), and Paninae (chimpanzees and bonobos). Great apes are typically larger-bodied than lesser apes, with complex social structures, advanced tool use capabilities, and higher cognitive abilities.

A Closer Look at the Great Apes



Orangutans (Pongo): Found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, the three extant orangutan species are the most solitary of the great apes. These intelligent arboreal giants are known for their reddish fur, long arms, and use of tools for foraging and nest building.

Gorillas (Gorilla): The largest living primates, gorillas inhabit the rainforests of central Africa. These gentle giants are divided into two species – the western gorilla and the eastern gorilla – with further subspecies classifications. Living in family groups led by a dominant silverback male, gorillas are primarily herbivores, spending most of their days feeding on leaves and fruits.

Chimpanzees and Bonobos (Pan): Our closest living relatives, chimpanzees and bonobos share over 98% of their DNA with humans. Found in central and West Africa, chimpanzees are highly intelligent and social animals, living in complex communities with distinct hierarchies. Bonobos, sometimes referred to as pygmy chimpanzees, are known for their peaceful and social nature, resolving conflicts through reconciliation and bonding behaviors.

Intelligence and Tool Use

Great apes exhibit problem-solving skills, complex communication through vocalizations and gestures, and even a capacity for self-awareness.
