The bridge is fine

*The Last Message*

Mara found the old satellite phone in her grandfather’s drawer. No SIM, no network, just a single message stuck in the outbox that never sent:

_“If you’re reading this, the bridge is down. Meet at the lighthouse.”_

That was 12 years ago. The bridge had been rebuilt years back. No one remembered the lighthouse.

But Mara went anyway.

The island was empty, wind chewing at the cliffs. The lighthouse door was unlocked. Inside, on the floor, was a small wooden box and a note:

_“To whoever finds this. I couldn’t wait. The storm took the bridge before I could cross. I left you the watch. It still keeps time, even when the world stops.”_

Inside was a rusted pocket watch. It was still ticking.

Mara sat on the steps and listened to it. For the first time in years, she wasn’t late for anything.

She took out her phone, opened a new message, and typed:
_“I’m here. The bridge is fine now. Come home.”_

She hit send. No signal.

But for some reason, that felt okay.
