Even for big-spending Real Madrid, Liverpool's homegrown star will likely come with a hefty price tag that may prove to be too expensive.

There are rumors circulating about the Spanish side's interest in the versatile right-back, but the likelihood of a deal materializing seems very low.

When Jurgen Klopp announced his departure from Liverpool, rumors immediately began swirling. Reports suggested that Virgil van Dijk wanted to leave, Mohamed Salah was considering his future, and even new signings brought in by Klopp were supposedly eyeing an exit. However, these discussions seemed premature and reactionary, typical of what often accompanies managerial changes.

More recently, a new rumor has emerged: Real Madrid is reportedly interested in Trent Alexander-Arnold. According to these reports, they are not only intrigued but actively keeping tabs on the situation and may be preparing to make a move.

This isn't just about money; emotions and questions of loyalty are also at play. Alexander-Arnold, a product of Liverpool's academy and a lifelong supporter of the club, may feel torn by the possibility of a move to Madrid. Liverpool fans, understandably, may be cautious due to past transfer sagas, such as Luis Suarez's departure to Barcelona and Fernando Torres's move to Chelsea. Even Steven Gerrard, at the peak of his career, was frequently linked with Real Madrid, only for Liverpool to reject their advances time and again.

As we consider Trent Alexander-Arnold, the vice-captain of Liverpool and a presumed lifelong supporter of the club, the likely perspective from Liverpool's point of view seems clear: he is not up for sale. Any rumors suggesting otherwise are likely just speculation from agents. However, from Real Madrid's perspective, pursuing Alexander-Arnold also seems impractical, as he would likely command a transfer fee too high even for the financial resources of the Spanish giants.

What Alexander-Arnold will want

Let's entertain the hypothetical scenario where Alexander-Arnold decides to leave Liverpool, willing to sever ties with his hometown and the club's supporters. This situation becomes intricate. Alexander-Arnold holds considerable leverage here, having shown no inclination to switch allegiances and therefore no urgency to relinquish any negotiating power he may possess.

His salary demands would undoubtedly be substantial. Currently earning £180,000 ($230,000) per week at Anfield, Alexander-Arnold would likely argue that he deserves more. While there haven't been specific discussions regarding his wage expectations in a potential contract extension, it wouldn't be unreasonable for him to seek upwards of the £200,000 ($250,000) per week earned by club captain Van Dijk.

Considering Real Madrid's payroll, Alexander-Arnold may feel entitled to a salary similar to the £275,000 ($350,000) per week paid to Federico Valverde, if not more. Factoring in a generous signing bonus, additional contract incentives, and other perks, this endeavor would undoubtedly prove to be a costly venture.

What Liverpool will want

The situation at Liverpool, assuming it even exists, presents challenges. It's difficult to envision the Reds allowing Alexander-Arnold to depart, even if contract negotiations stall. Despite discussions about maximizing value for a player who might leave, Alexander-Arnold is simply too integral to the team to be let go solely due to uncertainty. The only plausible scenario for his departure would be if he actively pushes for a move.

Even if Alexander-Arnold does seek an exit, Liverpool would be justified in demanding a significant fee for his transfer. Despite any contract disputes, it's important to recognize that he is a 25-year-old player, widely regarded as one of the most complete passers in the game after Kevin de Bruyne, and among the most talented in terms of striking the ball. Despite any perceived defensive weaknesses, Alexander-Arnold's overall quality is unquestionable.

Given his caliber, he would command a transfer fee commensurate with his talent. While Liverpool may not necessarily demand the upwards of £100 million ($126 million) that he could fetch in today's market, they could reasonably ask for a fee approaching that figure.

Where Madrid's money is already going

The discussion about Real Madrid's other transfer dealings must also be considered in this context. The most notable one revolves around Kylian Mbappe. Depending on which reports you believe, the forward has either finalized his move to Madrid or is on the brink of doing so. Reports suggest that Mbappe has made some unexpected concessions to facilitate his transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Unlike in previous negotiations, Mbappe is not demanding an exorbitant base salary. However, his overall cost remains significant. He is poised to become Madrid's highest-paid player and is expected to receive one of the largest signing bonuses in recent football history, estimated to be between €120-€150 million (£103m-£128m /$130m-$162m).

Additionally, he is set to retain an 80 percent share of his image rights in future deals. While Madrid stands to benefit greatly from his arrival both on the pitch and commercially, Mbappe's signing will undoubtedly represent a substantial financial commitment for the club, which is already facing financial constraints.

Does Alexander-Arnold want to go anyway?

Alexander-Arnold, who grew up admiring the same player, finds himself in a similar situation. The narrative of a homegrown academy player rising to the first team is often romanticized, but in Alexander-Arnold's case, it rings true. His connection to the city, demonstrated through his involvement in academy programs, local charity work, and more, is deeply ingrained. Despite the rumors, speculation on social media, and quotes from various sources, an exit from England seems improbable.

However, there is still apprehension. Real Madrid, being one of the biggest clubs globally, has a history of poaching players. Despite this, the circumstances may not be as straightforward this time. Madrid has other priorities and more pressing positions to address. Therefore, Liverpool fans can likely breathe a sigh of relief for now. It appears that their homegrown hero is set to stay at Anfield for the foreseeable future.
