Why Cash Flow Can Make or Break a Business

A business can have plenty of customers, impressive sales figures, and a popular product yet still struggle to survive. One major reason is poor cash flow management.

Cash flow is the movement of money into and out of a business. Money comes in through sales, customer payments, and other income. Money goes out through rent, salaries, supplies, taxes, transport, and other expenses.

The important point is that making a sale does not always mean receiving money immediately.

Imagine a business that sells ₦2 million worth of products in a month. On paper, that sounds impressive. However, suppose customers have only paid ₦1 million so far, while the business must pay ₦800,000 in expenses this week.

Even if the business expects more payments later, it may struggle to pay its bills today. This is why business owners must monitor not only how much they sell but also when money actually arrives.

There are several practical ways to improve cash flow.

First, track income and expenses consistently. You do not need complicated software to begin; a simple spreadsheet can help you understand where your money goes.

Second, follow up on unpaid invoices. When customers delay payment, your business may have difficulty meeting its own obligations.

Third, control unnecessary expenses. Spending more because sales are increasing can create problems if revenue later slows down.

Fourth, maintain a cash reserve whenever possible. An emergency fund can help cover unexpected expenses or periods of weaker sales.

Finally, understand the difference between revenue, profit, and cash. Revenue is what you earn from sales before expenses. Profit is what remains after the relevant expenses are deducted. Cash flow concerns when money enters and leaves your business.

A business does not become financially healthy simply because its sales look impressive. It becomes healthier when it can pay its obligations, manage its costs, and operate sustainably.

Discussion question: If you owned a business, would you focus first on increasing sales or improving cash flow, and why?
