A 19-year-old Norwegian footballer has found himself at the centre of one of the most shocking criminal cases currently being heard in the UK.
Johannes Natland is standing trial at London's Old Bailey after prosecutors alleged that he travelled from Norway to England to carry out a paid assassination on behalf of the Foxtrot Network, a notorious Swedish criminal organisation.
According to court proceedings, Natland arrived in the UK and was directed to collect cash, firearms and ammunition before an alleged murder mission could be carried out. However, armed police raided his hotel room in Huddersfield just two days after his arrival, recovering two guns and multiple rounds of live ammunition.
Bodycam footage shown to jurors captured a bizarre moment during the arrest. As officers ordered him out of his room, Natland reportedly made a shooting gesture with his hands towards the armed police before being restrained and arrested.
Despite admitting possession of the weapons, Natland denies conspiring to murder anyone. The teenager told the court that he was terrified and trapped by organised criminals who threatened him if he backed out. He claimed he never intended to kill anybody and even considered shooting himself in the foot as a desperate way to avoid carrying out the alleged mission.
The case has drawn widespread attention because of the dramatic contrast between Natland's background as a promising student and footballer and the serious allegations now being heard in court.
With the trial nearing its conclusion, a jury is expected to decide whether Natland was a willing participant in a murder plot or a frightened teenager caught up in a dangerous criminal network.
A verdict is expected in the coming days.
