eBay opens NFTs to Non-Crypto Buyers
The first nonfungible token (NFT) dropped by eBay was Wayne Gretsky tokenized items that went live Monday.
Graphic designers were inspired by the Sports Illustrated magazine covers to create animated renditions of Gretsky for the collection. There are 299 green editions, 199 gold editions, 99 platinum editions, and 15 diamond editions.
For sale on eBay, the collection is now available.
However, the $1,500 diamond, platinum, and gold levels have already sold out, as have the $25 diamond tiers.
NFT platform OneOf collaborated with eBay to create the collection, which includes items from various blockchains, including "energy-efficient blockchains."
In mid-2021, eBay began allowing NFT listings, although it has yet to incorporate blockchain technology within its marketplace.
During this official drop, users will receive an in-platform message or email with a redemption link that will allow them to get their NFTs outside of the platform.
Ethereum scaling platform Polygon was used to mint NFTs that can be traded using OneOf.
However, the secondary market for OneOf's NFTs has been limited, with only three users selling platinum tokens for $199 and one user selling a gold token for $69.
An eBay VP of collectibles, electronics, and home Dawn Block said that NFT technology is "revolutionizing the collectibles space" and emphasized that the firm is looking to bring NFTs to mainstream collectors worldwide.
"Through our partnership with OneOf, eBay is now making coveted NFTs more accessible to a new generation of collectors everywhere. This builds upon our commitment to deliver high passion, high-value items to the eBay community of buyers and sellers."
"We want to make NFTs accessible to people who aren't well versed in crypto," Lin Dai, CEO of OneOf, said.
"You don't have to be a crypto expert to buy, sell, and collect NFTs. OneOf and eBay are bringing transformative Web3 technology to the next 100M non-crypto-native mass consumers."
