The Alarm Clock That Quit

Chinedu set 5 alarms every morning. 5:00, 5:05, 5:10, 5:15, 5:30. He called it his “safety net.” But the net became his trap.

Every day he’d snooze all 5 alarms. Each buzz felt like a suggestion, not a command. He’d roll over, pull the blanket over his head, and tell himself “just 5 more minutes.” By the time he finally opened his eyes it was always 6:45. Sweat on his forehead, one shoe in his hand, shirt half-buttoned. He’d run to the bus stop while chewing bread, praying the bus wouldn’t leave him behind.

His alarm clock got tired. Phones don’t talk, but if they did, his would have sighed. One morning at 5:00 it stayed silent. At 5:05, silence. At 5:30, nothing. When Chinedu woke up at 9am, he checked his phone. All 5 alarms showed “missed.”

He ran to work late again. His Oga didn’t shout this time. He just said, “Chinedu, you’re a good worker. But you’re always late to your own life. You keep negotiating with 5am, and 5am always wins.”

That night Chinedu deleted 4 alarms. He kept only 5:00 and put the phone across the room. No snooze button within reach.

First morning was war. He had to stand up, walk, switch it off. But once he was standing, he stayed standing. He washed his face. Made tea. Got to work 20 minutes early.

After 2 weeks, his body woke up before the alarm. The clock didn’t quit. Chinedu stopped quitting on himself.

*Moral: Discipline starts when you stop negotiating with your bed.* ⏰
