The Hidden Cost of Crypto Trading Fees (andHow They Quietly Eat Your Profits)

Fees are the least exciting part of crypto, which is exactly why they hurt so many beginners. Nobody
celebrates a fee. But every trade has a toll, and the toll is charged whether you win or lose.
The round-trip effect
A fee is charged when you buy and again when you sell. So a 0.5% fee per trade is really about 1% for
the round trip. On a $5,000 position, that is roughly $50 in costs. Before you make a single dollar, the
price must rise enough to cover them.
Trades per month Position size Approx. fees paid
4 round trips $5,000 each $200
10 round trips $5,000 each $500
20 round trips $5,000 each $1,000
Those figures assume a flat 0.5% fee on each side. Many exchanges charge less at higher volume, and
some charge more on instant-buy features. The point stands either way: frequent trading raises the
hurdle your strategy has to clear.

Fees you may not notice

• Maker vs taker fees. Placing a limit order that waits in the order book is often cheaper than taking the
market price instantly.
• Spread. The gap between the buy and sell price is a cost even on exchanges that advertise zero
fees.
• Network fees. Withdrawals and transfers cost gas, which can spike when the network is busy.
• Conversion fees. Swapping coin to coin through a convenience feature often costs more than
trading on the main order book.
How to keep more of your profit
• Use limit orders when you are not in a hurry.
• Compare fee schedules before choosing where to trade.
• Trade less often, and make each trade count.
• Batch withdrawals instead of moving small amounts repeatedly.
Always calculate profit after fees, never before.
A useful habit: before entering a trade, ask what price you need just to break even. If that number is
already unrealistic, the trade is not worth taking. A profit calculator that includes fee fields makes this
check take seconds.
