"Al Nassr's head coach, Luis Castro, has confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo has not yet recovered from a hamstring injury and will miss the friendly match against Inter Miami, featuring Lionel Messi, today.
"Ronaldo is in the final stages of his recovery process to rejoin the team," Castro said on January 31st during a press conference ahead of the match. "We hope that Ronaldo can train with the full team in the coming days, but he will sit out the match against Inter Miami."
The encounter between Al Nassr and Inter Miami is the final match in the Riyadh Cup friendly tournament. In the previous match on January 29th, the U.S. representatives lost to Al Hilal 3-4.
While Ronaldo is sidelined due to injury, Inter Miami's stars, including Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, are all ready to take the field.
Ronaldo has not played since the 4-1 victory over Al Taawoun in the 19th round of the Saudi Pro League on December 30, 2023. The Portuguese forward contributed a goal in injury time to become the top scorer of 2023 with 54 goals, including 10 goals for the Portuguese national team and 44 at the club level. Since then, Ronaldo has been enjoying the mid-season break and recovering from the injury before returning to training."Ronaldo's injury has also led to Al Nassr canceling two friendly matches in China against Tianjin Quanjian on January 24 and Jiangsu Suning on January 28. The Portuguese forward personally apologized to Chinese fans and promised to return with Al Nassr in the near future once he has fully recovered.
According to Sportmail, this might be the last occasion for the 38-year-old Ronaldo and 36-year-old Messi to face each other on the field. The most recent encounter between the two superstars was also in a friendly match when Messi, with PSG, faced a team of Riyadh All-Stars including Ronaldo in January 2023. Ronaldo scored a brace in that match, but his team still lost 4-5 to PSG.
Considering both friendly and competitive matches, Messi and Ronaldo have faced each other 37 times, with Messi's teams winning 17, drawing 9, and losing 11 matches. In these encounters, both players have scored 23 goals each. However, if we only consider La Liga and the Champions League, the Argentine superstar has scored 15 goals, four more than the Portuguese captain.
After the match against Al Nassr concludes the Riyadh Cup, Inter Miami will travel to Hong Kong and Japan to continue the preseason phase before returning to the United States to prepare for MLS 2024. In the preceding matches, Messi's team disappointed with a 0-0 draw against El Salvador and a 0-1 loss to FC Dallas.
