Practice Active Listening
Active listening entails paying close attention to what the other person is saying, both verbally and nonverbally. Instead of simply waiting for your turn to speak, actively listen and try to understand what the person is saying and how they feel.

Express Understanding
It is critical to express empathy appropriately once you understand how the other person feels. This entails demonstrating that you understand and share the other person's emotions.
This does not imply comparing their situation to another's or describing your own previous experiences. While it may appear that you are making them feel less alone, it frequently has the effect of minimizing or dismissing what they are going through.

Be Aware of Your Personal Biases
Be aware of your own biases and preconceptions when attempting to be empathetic toward others. Everyone has their own set of experiences and perspectives that shape how they see the world and its people. Consider how your own biases may influence how you perceive someone else's situation, and then try to set those feelings aside in order to see or feel things from their perspective.

Make no assumptions.
When attempting to be empathetic, one of the most important things to remember is to avoid making assumptions about the other person's thoughts or feelings. Instead, try to see things through their eyes and, if necessary, ask them questions.
