Late doesn't mean last

She failed JAMB three times.

Her friends were already in 300 level. Posting “matric gown” pics. Hers was still hanging in her mom’s wardrobe, unworn, covered in plastic. Every Sunday at church, somebody’s aunty would ask, “So, no school yet?”

She started telling people she was “taking a gap year.” The gap lasted 3 years. She sold data and thrift wears on WhatsApp. Made enough to feed herself. Not enough to stop the shame.

On her fourth JAMB, she scored 289. She got Chemical Engineering at UNILAG. She was 22. Her coursemates were 17. In year one, a lecturer called her “mama” in front of 200 people. She laughed. She cried that night.

Year two, she almost quit. Thermodynamics was a different language. She failed the first test. 18/60. She sat in the library till 11pm every day after that. No boyfriend. No parties. Just past questions and YouTube lecturers with Indian accents.

She graduated with a 4.31. First class. At 26.

At convocation, the same aunty from church hugged her. “I knew you’d make it.” She didn’t say, “Where were you in year two?” She just smiled.

Now she works offshore. Six figures monthly. Her LinkedIn bio says “Chemical Engineer.” It doesn’t say “late bloomer.” It doesn’t need to.

Because the people who start late don’t finish last. They just finish different.

Your timeline is not late. It’s just not theirs.

And if anyone asks why you’re still in school, tell them you’re not “still” in school.

You’re becoming.
