Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. People with insomnia may also wake up feeling unrefreshed. Insomnia can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term). Acute insomnia is usually caused by a stressor, such as a traumatic event, or a change in one's environment or schedule. Chronic insomnia is often caused by underlying health conditions, medications, or lifestyle factors, such as poor sleep hygiene. Insomnia can lead to a number of problems, including daytime fatigue, poor concentration, irritability, and a weakened immune system, and it can also increase the risk of developing other health conditions such as depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.
There are several ways to overcome insomnia, including:

  1. Establishing a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends.
  2. Creating a relaxing bedtime routine, such as reading a book or taking a warm bath, to help signal to your body that it's time to sleep.
  3. Making sure your sleeping environment is comfortable and conducive to sleep, such as keeping the room dark, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature.
  4. Avoiding stimulating activities and substances, such as caffeine, nicotine, and electronic devices, before bedtime.
  5. Engaging in regular physical activity during the day and avoiding heavy meals, alcohol, or large amounts of fluid close to bedtime.
  6. Practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation or yoga can be helpful as well.
  7. If the insomnia is persistent, it's important to seek help from a healthcare professional, who can rule out any underlying medical or psychological conditions that may be contributing to the problem, and suggest further treatment options.
