God did
Blessing was a final year student at UNILAG. Last semester, she failed one course by 2 marks.
To graduate, she needed to retake it. But the course was only offered in 200-level, and the lecturer was notorious. Students called him “Sapa.” He’d fail 70% of the class every time. Retake students especially.
She registered, sat through the classes, submitted all assignments. Exam day came. She studied for 3 months.
The paper was brutal. She left the hall crying. Thought that was it - another year wasted.
Two weeks later, results dropped. She checked her portal: F.
She broke down in her hostel. Her mom had sold wrappers to pay her school fees. Her younger brother was waiting for her to graduate so he could go to uni too.
She went to the lecturer’s office to beg for mercy. Department secretary stopped her at the door: “He’s not taking appeals today.”
As she turned to leave, her phone rang. Unknown number.
“Blessing? This is Dr. Adebayo from the Computer Science department. We saw your project on AI for farmers. We’re starting a research team and we need someone like you. Full scholarship for Masters + stipend.”
She hadn’t even applied. Her project was just her final year work. One of the external examiners saw it and recommended her.
She graduated that same year. The “F” was later changed to a C after a departmental review. Turns out there was a marking error.
Today she’s doing her Masters in Canada, working on agri-tech.
When people ask how she graduated despite failing that course, she doesn’t talk about the examiner or the phone call.
She just says:
God did.
