Mama Chika sold akara and pap at the bus stop in Benin every morning at 5am.

Her son Uche got admission to UNIBEN but no money for tuition. She’d been saving in a tin for 3 years, but it was only ₦40k. Tuition was ₦85k. She tried loan apps, her church group, even the landlord. Everyone said no.

Last day to pay, she packed up early and went home. She couldn’t face telling Uche she’d failed.

On her way, her akara oil finished. She stopped to buy more at the market. The woman at the oil stand looked at her empty buckets and asked, “No business today?”

Mama Chika told her everything. Tuition, no money, last day.

The woman didn’t say much. She just poured oil into her buckets and said, “Pay me when you can.” Then she pulled out an envelope from under her table. “My daughter graduated from UNIBEN last year. I kept her school fees after she got a scholarship. ₦50k is still there. Take it. Pay me back when Uche gets his first salary.”

Uche resumed that Monday. He graduated with a 2:1 in Computer Science last year.

Mama Chika still sells akara at the same bus stop. But now there’s a sign above her stall: “Uche’s First Salary Spot.” She tells every customer the story.

When people ask how her son finished school with ₦40k in a tin, she doesn’t talk about the oil or the envelope.

She just says:

God did.
