In an increasingly globalized and digitalized world, cryptocurrencies have become an alternative to the traditional financial system, offering advantages such as decentralization, transparency, speed and security. Little by little, the economic and social actors who become aware of this reality and join the crypto revolution are increasing. One of the most prominent examples is Próspera, a special economic zone located on the island of Roatán, in Honduras, which has recognized Bitcoin as an accounting unit. Próspera is a model city that seeks to attract investment, innovation and development to Honduras, offering a favorable legal and regulatory framework, modern infrastructure and an entrepreneurial culture. This territory is governed by its own constitution, which guarantees economic freedom, legal security and respect for the human rights of its inhabitants. The adoption of Bitcoin as an accounting unit is another example of the commitment to the technological forefront and financial inclusion, seeking to be a world reference in the use of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, also offering efficient and transparent solutions for public and private management.

Próspera is not the only Honduran city that has opted for Bitcoin. In July 2022, the Bitcoin Valley project was launched, an initiative that seeks to promote tourism and commerce in the town of Santa Lucía, where more than 60 businesses accept Bitcoin as a form of payment. The project has the support of the mayor of Santa Lucía, the Coincaex exchange platform, the Blockchain Honduras organization and the Technological University of Honduras.

These experiences demonstrate that Honduras is also at the forefront of cryptocurrency adoption in Latin America, following the example of El Salvador, which became the first country in the world to recognize Bitcoin as legal tender.
