The Winklevoss twins, co-founders of the Gemini crypto exchange and famous for being among the earliest Wall Street adopters of Bitcoin (BTC), have declared a significant new strategic focus on privacy. They announced the launch of a new Digital Asset Treasury (DAT) company named Cypherpunk, which has successfully raised $100 million dedicated to acquiring and accumulating Zcash (ZEC), the privacy-focused protocol that originated from a Bitcoin codebase hard fork in 2016.

This profound new emphasis on privacy, according to Tyler Winklevoss, is directly catalyzed by the significant and rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) observed over the past two years. Drawing a historical parallel, he stated that while "the catalyst for Bitcoin was very much the financial crisis of 2008, the catalyst for privacy is the dawn of the age of AI." The twins firmly believe that the increasing capabilities of AI necessitate robust privacy tools to ensure self-sovereignty for individuals in the digital age.

Cypherpunk aims to aggressively accumulate up to 5% of the total circulating supply of ZEC, underscoring the twins' long-term conviction in Zcash's potential role in the crypto ecosystem. Tyler Winklevoss detailed their complementary view of the two assets: they see Bitcoin as the "unrivalled digital store of value," akin to digital gold, while Zcash, which they term "encrypted Bitcoin," is the protocol where users should transact or spend their value privately.

Crucially, the Winklevoss twins maintain a stance that contrasts sharply with certain hardline Bitcoin Maximalists, emphasizing that "Crypto is not a zero-sum game." Cameron Winklevoss argued that innovations like Ethereum's programmability and Zcash's privacy features do not detract from Bitcoin; rather, they serve to "grow the whole pie," including the Bitcoin pie itself, by attracting diverse groups of users and engineers into the wider crypto space. He suggested that if Zcash's utility solves pressing problems like financial privacy in the face of encroaching AI, it ultimately benefits the entire industry.

They believe Zcash is currently reaching a new "inflection point" in 2025—a moment of exponential growth and mainstream notice—similar to the pivotal moments Bitcoin experienced earlier in its 16-year history, such as the 2013 Cyprus banking crisis. The growing concern that AI could be leveraged by powerful entities to monitor and analyze personal financial data makes the privacy features offered by Zcash an increasingly urgent requirement for the Cypherpunk movement, the very ideology their new company is named after, dedicated to using encryption for personal liberty.
