God did
Maya kept failing her driving test.
Third time, the examiner didn’t even let her pull out of the lot. “You’re too nervous. You freeze at intersections.”
She was 32, working double shifts at the hospital cafeteria, and the bus route to the night shift took 2 hours each way. The test fee was $45 she didn’t have. Her daughter’s birthday was coming up, and Maya wanted to drive her to the zoo without asking her ex for a ride.
She almost quit. Told her coworker, “Some people just aren’t meant to drive.”
Her coworker, Mrs. Chen, just nodded and handed her a set of keys at the end of the shift.
“My old Corolla’s been sitting since my son got a new car. Engine runs. Take it for practice in the church parking lot on Sundays. No charge.”
Maya cried in the parking lot that first Sunday. Not because she was happy. Because nobody had ever just… given her access without a lecture.
She practiced for 6 weeks. Stalled 20 times. Mrs. Chen showed up once with coffee and sat in the passenger seat without saying a word.
Fourth test, she passed. No hesitation at the intersection.
Two months later she got a job as a home health aide. Pays better, closer to home, and she can take her daughter to school now.
Last week she drove Mrs. Chen to her doctor’s appointment.
When they got back, Mrs. Chen said, “You did the work.”
Maya just shook her head and said:
God did.
