From Hype to Hollow: Where did airdrops go?

Remember when airdrops used to mean something?

You’d stumble into a project early, explore it out of curiosity, provide feedback, spread the word. You weren’t doing it for a reward — but one day, boom — tokens appeared in your wallet. It felt like being seen. A pat on the back from the protocol. That was the soul of Web3: shared ownership, community-first values, and incentives that made sense.

But somewhere along the way, we lost that spirit.

Today, airdrops are mostly noise. Bots farm them. Wallets game the system. Protocols airdrop to inflate metrics or pump short-term hype. Real contributors get overlooked, and when the tokens do drop, they’re often dumped without a second thought. What used to be a tool for alignment now feels like a desperate marketing tactic.

The fix? Rebuild with intention. Reward identity and contribution, not just activity. Think long-term. Use soulbound tokens. Leverage reputation. Make it harder to fake and easier to believe in.

Until then, I’ll keep showing up. No expectations — just conviction.

Because Web3 is still worth believing in.
