Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio was born on November 11, 1974, in Los Angeles, California, to Irmelin Indenbirken, a legal secretary, and George DiCaprio, an underground comix artist and distributor. His parents met in college, moving to Los Angeles after graduating. DiCaprio's mother is German, while his father has Italian and German ancestry. His maternal grandparents were Wilhelm Indenbirken, a German, and Helene Indenbirken, a Russian immigrant.

Raised Catholic, DiCaprio's unique name has its origin in his mother feeling his first kick while looking at a Leonardo da Vinci painting in the Uffizi museum in Florence, Italy. His parents divorced when he was one year old, and to raise him together, they moved into twin cottages in Echo Park, Los Angeles. DiCaprio's father later lived with his girlfriend and her son, Adam Farrar, with whom DiCaprio developed a close bond. Despite moving to various neighborhoods, including Los Feliz, DiCaprio describes his parents as "bohemian" and the people he trusts the most.

Growing up in challenging surroundings marked by poverty, prostitution, crime, and violence, DiCaprio attended the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies and later John Marshall High School. Dissatisfied with public school, he dropped out, earning a general equivalency diploma. As a child, he aspired to be a marine biologist or actor. His interest in acting began at age two when he spontaneously danced on stage during a performance festival.

DiCaprio's acting ambitions faced initial challenges, with difficulty finding an agent. Despite 100 auditions, he remained jobless for a year and a half. His father's encouragement and the prospect of financial security kept him going. Eventually, a talent agent recommended him to casting directors, leading to roles in about 20 commercials. In the early 1990s, DiCaprio transitioned to television with appearances in The Outsiders and Santa Barbara. His breakthrough came with the series Parenthood, earning him two Youth in Film Awards nominations.
