Manchester City were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid
Manchester United dropped a “perfectly-timed” tweet moments after Manchester City’s Champions League exit.
Real Madrid knocked out the reigning champions in their own Etihad backyard on Wednesday night on penalties. Los Blancos, who have won the competition a record 14 times, took an early lead thanks to Rodrygo to stun Pep Guardiola’s side, who were favourites to win the tie.
City equalised late courtesy of Kevin De Bruyne to force extra time and penalties, dominating Carlo Ancelotti’s Galacticos but failing to snatch a winner.
And that cost them dearly as the visitors held their nerve to win 4-3 in the shootout and reach the semi-finals of the competition, after Bernardo Silva missed his penalty in embarrassing fashion by chipping it.

The English and European champions were left bitterly disappointed - and rivals United seized the opportunity to rub salt in the wounds further. Just a matter of minutes after Antonio Rudiger scored his penalty to knock City out, the Red Devils’ official X account posted a tweet with the words: “Wembley is calling.”
It referred to United facing Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday. But the timing led fans to believe it was simultaneously a cheeky dig at City, whose exit meant they would not reach the Champions League final at Wembley.
