I coded a bot

Good morning/evening

Some of you may be aware from my posts that I have recently come back from a trip to the UK as our rental property needed to be renovated, but before that I was also very busy in a different way. After a flippant remark from my husband regarding coding your own bot using AI, I set out to give it a go. Let me explain this, I am not a youngster anymore so things take a bit longer to sink in (Dial up and Nokia era lol). I have never written a line of code in my life and even though I have heard of things like Python and Rust that does not mean I understand it, not even the basics.

You may also have read that I struggle with keeping my emotions in check when trading, and don't always follow my own rules, so this would be where having my own trading bot, set with my rules (that work when I use them!) would help.

So I started with some basic prompts into the AI, using both Claude and CGBT and the first thing I learnt was that the prompts you put in are almost as important as what comes out as the AI seemed to think I was some coding genius and actually understood what it was telling me, which was definitely not the case, but I persevered, I just can't emphasize enough that I really was clueless, not just about what to do but even down to how to write this code, so there were many mistakes along the way which is probably why it took me a month, not just an hour here and there but solid 6-8 hours a day. I don't quite know whether to feel sorry for people who code for a living or revere them as some sort of demigod!

The AI also was telling little lies along the way 'your almost there, just a few more steps' like it was trying to motivate a complete moron which is how I felt a lot of the time, but I am too stubborn to give up, so I keep going even though I knew the date we had to leave is fast approaching and I had nothing prepared for the trip other than a route.

There were a few of things I needed, basically a server for which I am paying monthly, premium Trading View which my husband has anyway and an upgrade to the AI, both were not that costly, the server took a day to be verified and ok to use, the AI for more prompts was instant, and I needed a lot more prompts. Another hurdle was an API key, some worked and some didn't but eventually I had the right key. A wallet, no biggie but a fresh burner on Phantom did not work due to some format being wrong so I had to have another new wallet not on Phantom not an issue, just have soooo many (wallet number 3999 lol).

The parameters I have set are to buy and sell at specific prices based on research and rules I have for myself so each token will be different, I started with one token for now to keep it simple and test and even baking these parametres into the code took some doing. Nothing worked the first time......There were conflicts here, there and everywhere, change something and it caused another issue and this went on and on but remember the AI keeps trying to motivate me, 'honestly you are nearly there' and I was. Suddenly all the pieces came together after all these hours of work. my bot is doing what it is supposed to do and it is set in test mode so I can go through the data to make sure the test trades are correct. The constant pings from the laptop are reassuring but it is now only a couple of days before the trip so perhaps I should think about packing!

There was a small hope I would get time whilst in the UK to check the data and the bot but with only sketchy mobile data it was not to be, even a basic video call meant you had to move around and find the best signal so it would just have to wait until I was home, frustrating to say the least but it is what it is. Then when I was home there were a lot of jobs to do, including figuring out how our teen broke his car, getting a suit for prom from a city 2 hours away and making the house look like it hadn't had 12 people living in it doing no washing or cleaning. Then the bot........

Doing this bot made me realise just how easy it would be to just add some code that was a wallet drainer, not that I would do that but many do and you see lots of people selling their bots and honestly would someone with no clue go through endless lines of code to check if it was safe or even understand what they are reading?

The kicker

My bot was set up on Drift.........................

Yep, I had used Drift a fair bit, usually for shorting s**t coins and there are a wide selection of those, so now nothing. The wallet for the bot was funded but not with a huge amount as was the normal Drift trading wallet, but do you know what, the worst thing is not that it is likely those funds are lost it is the hours spent. If I thought it would be a case of changing a few lines of code to make it work on a different platform and off it goes again then I would do it, but I don't think that is the case and it is taking me some time to want to start the process from scratch. I am sure I will at some point, just not right now as I have an endless to do list and some outside jobs I would rather do before the temperature hits 35 degrees.
Have you coded yourself something using AI? Would you trust the code given to you by an AI? I was probably quite surprised the bot worked but for Drift to then go down was quite disappointing, but I can retry lol. As always thank you for reading and please feel free to comment.
