Open Hardware
You won’t have to read many articles from this writer to figure out that open source software is a passion. As such, it goes almost without saying that open source hardware is a natural extension of this.
Open hardware is a great place to start if you’re looking to build IOT or hardware-based projects. While you’ll find a full selection of helpful projects to give you some ideas on what to build, the real value comes from the Books and Podcasts that you’ll find alongside them.

Awesome Free Software
We told you in FreeforDev that free stuff is cool, but in this instance, you don’t have to be a web developer to reap the rewards. The Awesome Free Stuff list has a list of tools that are distributed under various open-source licenses.
Here, you’ll find familiar names like Audacity, Signal and LibreOffice office but along with that, there are plenty of tools that you might not have heard of yet.
While social media has conditioned us to the concept of “if it's free, you’re the product”, thankfully, in the open-source community, this saying doesn't always ring true. If you’re willing to take the time to browse the available resources, you’ll often find open source alternatives to many of the products that have taken to the dreaded monthly subscription tier.

A Word Of Warning
GitHub is great. Seriously, there have been far too many hours wasted looking at obscure software packages and resources that are useful for both teaching and learning.
Unfortunately, though, the modern world is a threat-rich environment, and it’s worth keeping this in the back of your head while you’re exploring.
While you shouldn’t expect hackers lurking in every shadow, the fact is that GitHub’s trust has been exploited before. So, while you’ll certainly find some interesting things there, it’s worth taking the time to do a quick check of any packages or scripts that you might be planning to install, especially if they require root permissions.
If you’re uploading your own code to share, be sure to sanitise any credentials and ensure that you haven’t left any other sensitive information in it before you upload it.
When you’re running, sharing or installing software, a little bit of proactive security usually goes a very long way.
