Physically, early and middle adulthood are characterized by a sluggish, progressively declining level of bodily function, which quickens when old age is approached. After reaching its peak in the mid-20s, muscular mass gradually starts to decline. After reaching a peak around the age of 30, the skeletal mass starts to decline, with the central skeleton (the pelvis and spine) experiencing the first declines and the peripheral skeleton the last (fingers and toes). Even in the absence of obvious disease, the heart muscle eventually becomes weaker as a result of the progressive buildup of cholesterol in the arteries over the course of adulthood. Although this cannot directly be connected to the progressive decline in sexual activity that occurs in both males and females between 20 and, the production of both male and female hormones decreases with age. 60.

It is abundantly obvious that as they become older, adults show a steady, very progressive propensity to respond less quickly when performing mental (and physical) tasks. The aging adult brain's electrical activity has been connected to the slowing of behavior itself. This slowing of the central nervous system's processing rate does not automatically imply corresponding alterations in memory, learning, or other intellectual abilities. Young individuals have a greater potential for learning than older adults do, and they are also better able to classify new information according to its content or meaning. On the other hand, older individuals are on par with or better than younger ones in terms of their ability to retain general knowledge and their collected cultural knowledge.
