Mama Nkechi sold food at Yaba. She closed by 10pm and went home to her face-me-I-face-you.

Her generator was old. Red "Tiger" generator. It only started when you pull the cord like 10 times and curse it small.

One night around 2am, her neighbor, Baba Tunde, woke up to `brrrr brrrr brrrr`
Generator sound.

He peeped outside. It was Mama Nkechi’s compound. Her generator was on. Light was on. But her door was locked. No one outside.

Baba Tunde knocked. No answer. He called her. No answer.

He called other tenants. They said: `We’ve been hearing it for 1 hour. But Mama is not around. She traveled to the village today.`

Everyone got scared. NEPA was off. So where was the power coming from?

Baba Tunde got brave. He went to the back, where the generator was kept.
The generator was running. Pull cord was still inside. Fuel tank was almost empty.

And on top the generator... was a small plate of food. Rice and stew. Still warm.

The next morning, Mama Nkechi came back. They told her.
She went to the generator and said: `Papa, thank you for watching the shop.`

Turns out, her husband Papa Nkechi died 6 months ago. He was the one who used to wake up 3am to off the generator and put food out for night watchmen.

Since he died, tenants said they sometimes hear the generator at night. And in the morning, there’s always a plate of food on it, and the gate is open for customers.

Mama Nkechi never sold that generator. She said: `As long as it’s running, my husband is still taking care of us.`

Till today, if you pass that street at 2am, you’ll hear `brrrr`... then in the morning, the food is gone.

*Moral:* Love doesn’t stop at death. Sometimes it just learns new ways to show up.
