In an unexpected twist that has shaken the world of video games, God of War Ragnarok is preparing to receive its latest expansion, titled Valhalla. This free update, announced at the prestigious Game Awards 2023, promises to take players on an epic adventure that transcends expectations.

The Valhalla expansion is not just another addition to the game; It is an epilogue that promises to close the Nordic saga of Kratos with a flourish. With a roguelike mode reminiscent of the acclaimed The Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered, Valhalla will challenge players to survive hordes of enemies in changing environments, with random encounters that ensure a unique experience in each game.

After the end of the base game, Kratos and Mimir are invited into Valhalla by a stranger. Although it is initially unclear why, Kratos sees this as an opportunity to clear his mind following an offer from Freya to become the new God of War of the Nine Realms.

While attempting to enter Valhalla, Kratos is cursed, resulting in his demise. However, he wakes up near the entrance and finds Freya, Sigrun, and the other Valkyries investigating the disturbance. Despite berating him for his attempt, they agree to help him find out who invited him and why. It is revealed that only Kratos and Mimir can enter, as they are both technically dead and can enter this realm meant for the deceased.
In a surprising twist, during his second attempt to enter Valhalla, Mimir is temporarily replaced by the decapitated head of Helios, the Greek sun god, who taunts Kratos and pushes him later in the trial. Kratos is forced to choose between sacrificing himself or Helios to continue. In the end, he chooses Helios, but discovers that he has been replaced by Mimir. Kratos saves Mimir, but nearly destroys Valhalla in the process. Sigrun rescues them, but suffers dire consequences for interfering.

Eventually, Kratos and Mimir complete the test and meet with Tyr, who reveals that he was the one who invited Kratos to face Valhalla to help him come to terms with his past actions as Greece's god of war. This ending can be interpreted as a closure to Kratos' character arc or as a possible preview of future installments.

But what really gets the community buzzing is the promise that this expansion is more than just a game mode; is a narrative epilogue described as the end of Kratos's final adventure. The words “epilogue” and “end” resonate with significant weight, suggesting that players are about to witness the closing of an important chapter in the story of the Ghost of Sparta.

Following God of War Ragnarok's Valhalla expansion, it appears that Santa Monica Studio is working on several projects. Cory Barlog, creative director of the studio, has mentioned that they are “diversified into many different things,” although he has not given specific details. Rumors suggest that Barlog could be working on a new fantasy game.

Additionally, the studio has a history of collaborating on creative projects and participating in the development of other PlayStation licenses, indicating that they could be exploring new directions beyond the God of War saga. Although there are no official announcements regarding a new God of War installment after Ragnarok, the popularity and success of the series makes it likely that it will continue in some form in the future.

The expectation is high, and the excitement is palpable. Will Santa Monica Studio be able to meet the high expectations and deliver a satisfying conclusion to the story of Kratos and Atreus?
