Rachel Brosnahan, born on July 12, 1990, is an American actress best known for her role as the title character, an aspiring stand-up comedian, in the Amazon Prime Video series "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel." Her portrayal earned her critical acclaim, including a Primetime Emmy Award in 2018 and consecutive Golden Globe Awards in 2018 and 2019.
Before her breakout role in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," Brosnahan appeared in various television series, including the political thriller "House of Cards" and the drama "Manhattan." She also made her film debut in the horror movie "The Unborn" in 2009 and has since appeared in films such as "Beautiful Creatures," "Louder Than Bombs," "The Finest Hours," "Patriots Day," "Spies in Disguise," "The Courier," and "I'm Your Woman."

Brosnahan has also showcased her talent on stage, making her Broadway debut in the revival of the Clifford Odets play "The Big Knife" in 2013. She played Desdemona in the New York Theatre Workshop production of "Othello" in 2016 and returned to Broadway in 2023 for the revival of the Lorraine Hansberry play "The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window."

Rachel Brosnahan was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Carol and Earl Brosnahan, who were involved in children's publishing. Her upbringing was in Highland Park, Illinois, where she moved with her family at the age of four. She has a younger brother and sister and is the niece of the late fashion designer Kate Spade.
While Brosnahan is known for her portrayal of a Jewish character on television, she does not practice Judaism and has no Jewish ancestors. However, she was deeply immersed in Jewish culture growing up in Highland Park.

Brosnahan attended Wayne Thomas Elementary School and Northwood Junior High School. During her school years, she participated in musical theater and was also part of the wrestling team and worked as a snowboarding instructor at Highland Park High School. At the age of 16, she took a class with Carole Dibo, who later became her manager.
After high school, Brosnahan graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 2012, where she honed her acting skills and prepared for her future career in the entertainment industry.

Rachel Brosnahan's acting career began to take shape while she was still in high school. She landed her first movie role in the Michael Bay-produced horror film "The Unborn" (2009), portraying the character Lisa. During her college years, she made appearances in single episodes of various television series, including "Gossip Girl," "The Good Wife," "Grey's Anatomy," and "In Treatment." Brosnahan also starred in two short films directed by Ari Aster: "Basically" (2013) and "Munchausen" (2014).
After completing college, Brosnahan started securing recurring roles in television series such as the crime thriller "The Blacklist" (2014) and the medical drama "Black Box" (2014). She made her stage debut in 2009 at the Steppenwolf Theatre and later debuted on Broadway in "The Big Knife" with the Roundabout Theatre Company in 2013. In 2016, she portrayed Desdemona in "Othello" at the New York Theatre Workshop alongside David Oyelowo and Daniel Craig.

Brosnahan's breakout role came in 2013 when she starred as Rachel Posner in the critically acclaimed Netflix political drama "House of Cards," opposite Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. Initially booked for only two episodes, her performance impressed showrunner Beau Willimon, leading to the expansion of her character's role. Brosnahan received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her work on the show. In 2016, she appeared in Woody Allen's Amazon series "Crisis in Six Scenes" alongside Allen, Elaine May, and Miley Cyrus.
