Counsel is advice given by someone with some higher degree of experience or qualification to help another overcome a difficulty or problem. Counsel is usually used to refer to professional help like the one given in therapy sessions by a professional, but one does not have to be a professional therapist to be able to give good counsel.

Whenever you visit a new location or city, you usually need help finding your way around the new place and locating important places like the mall, the hospital and so on.  Similarly, as a young person who is just starting in life or as someone new to a particular thing, listening to and paying heed to good counsel goes a long way to help stay on track and achieve your goals faster. However if you refuse to heed the advice given to you or assume that you can navigate anything by yourself without any help, like someone who refuses to ask directions in a foreign land, you will get lost and miss your way.

Although heeding good advice is instrumental in reaching your goals quickly, not all advice is good or should be taken. Only take advice from a mentor or coach who has enough experience in that particular field, or someone who not only is above you but also has your best interests at heart. A good counsellor is usually one who is observant but also a good listener, respectful but confident, non-judgmental and empathetic. A parent or guardian can counsel their children/wards, a junior employee can seek advice from higher staff, etc.

When you seek and heed good advice, you will be able to be more decisive and disciplined and consequently achieve your set goals faster and with relative ease. You will also be saving yourself from the pangs of regret.
