On 3rd June 2022, STEPN announced an update to its anti-cheat system. As per the blog post, cheating is becoming a major issue as STEPN grows in popularity. Hence, its developers have dedicated approximately half of their resources to developing anti-cheating mechanisms.
STEPN developers have utilized Artificial Intelligence (AI) to combat cheating. Their Artificial Intelligence (AI) team has been examining patterns for months. And finally, they have developed a world-class anti-cheating system. It is built on self-learning algorithms that have been trained on a wide range of data, including GPS tracking, motion sensor, and health data, in order to detect anomalies.
Anomaly Detection is a technique for finding uncommon events or observations that are statistically distinct from the rest of the observations and can raise suspicions. While there are a variety of deep learning approaches available, STEPN used auto-encoders to put together the data.
Auto-encoders are a powerful tool for not only detecting abnormalities but also for determining the variables that caused the anomalies. Auto-encoders may detect when an odd input is passed by learning what is considered “normal behavior.” It is able to highlight whenever an anomaly arises due to its inability to precisely recreate the data to match the original.
STEPN’s SMAC System
After three months of training STEPN’s machine learning algorithm, the team has presented a Model for Anti-Cheating (SMAC). Furthermore, if the SMAC System detects an anomaly, the user will be flagged as cheating and all the data of the session will be erased.
