Got you. Here’s another 259-word story:

---

She was 19 when her dad died.

He was a mechanic. Left no house, no savings. Just a toolbox and a 2003 Toyota Corolla that wouldn’t start. Her mom sold puff-puff at the junction. School fees for her and two siblings became a monthly miracle.

She got admission to study Accounting at LASU. First in her family. But in 200 level, mom got sick. Hospital bills swallowed everything. She deferred a semester. Then two. Her coursemates were doing SIWES. She was doing “housemaid” in Lekki.

The madam of the house was an accountant. Had ICAN, CIS, all the letters. One night she saw the girl solving her daughter’s JSS2 maths. “You no dey school?”

She explained. The madam didn’t say sorry. She said, “Come to my office tomorrow.”

Tomorrow became an intern role. Filing tax returns. No pay. Just transport and lunch. She did it for 8 months. Learned Excel. Learned patience. Learned that nobody cares about your CGPA if you can’t reconcile a ledger.

When mom got better, she went back to school. Graduated at 26 with a 2:1. Not first class. But she had 3 years of experience and a referral letter.

She’s 31 now. Chartered accountant. Runs payroll for 400 staff. Last month she bought her mom a 3-bedroom bungalow. The Corolla is still in the compound. Now it starts. She refuses to sell it.

At the housewarming, her mom cried. “Your papa for proud.”

She didn’t correct her. He _is_ proud.

Because sometimes the delay isn’t denial. It’s training.

And the toolbox you inherit isn’t always spanners. Sometimes it’s grit.

You don’t need a smooth start. You need a reason to finish.
