What is behind the mysterious unidentified flying objects (UFOs) that have been sighted by the military and civilians in the American sky? Are they alien drones, natural phenomena, or visitors from another planet? These are some of the questions that have generated intense debate in the United States Congress, where officials and legislators have called for more government transparency on the subject.
On July 26, a House subcommittee held a landmark hearing on so-called "unidentified anomalous phenomena" (FANI), the official term used to refer to UFOs. In the session, three retired soldiers testified about their own experiences with these objects and warned that they constitute a national security problem.
David Grusch, a former Air Force intelligence officer, stated that the Pentagon has in its possession remains of alien spacecraft and "non-human remains" and that it has concealed its investigations into it. David Fravor, a retired Navy commander, recounted how in 2004 he came across a white "tick tock" that moved at high speed and changed direction effortlessly. Ryan Graves, a former Navy pilot, stated that FANI sightings are "routine" and that the stigma attached to them prevents them from being properly reported.
The legislators who promoted the hearing, both Democrats and Republicans, called for the government to be more forthcoming about the FANI and for the information it possesses to be declassified. "We can't trust a government that doesn't trust its citizens," said Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee. "This is a matter of government transparency," he added.
The hearing came after the United States intelligence community delivered a report to Congress on the FANI last June, in which it recognized that there are 144 documented cases since 2004 that have no satisfactory explanation. The report ruled out that it is US technology, but could not determine if they are foreign aircraft or evidence of extraterrestrial life.
The history behind the UFO phenomenon in the United States dates back to the 1940s, when the country was engulfed in World War II and the Cold War. Some of the most important milestones are:
๐ In 1942, the so-called "Battle of Los Angeles" occurred, an incident in which the city's anti-aircraft defenses fired at an alleged unidentified flying object that was flying over the night sky. No remains were ever found nor was the nature of the object confirmed.
๐ In 1947, the famous "Roswell Incident" occurred, in which metallic remains found on a ranch in New Mexico were announced by the press as the remains of a flying saucer. However, the US military denied the version and stated that it was a hot air balloon from the Mogul project, a secret spy program for the Soviet Union. Years later, theories arose that the government hid the truth and that the remains were from an alien ship and even its occupants.
๐ In 1952, a wave of UFO sightings over Washington D.C. was recorded, which caused great public and media alarm. Radars detected unidentified objects moving at high speed and changing direction. Some pilots also saw them from their planes. The army explained that it was either atmospheric phenomena or human error.
๐ In 1969, Project Blue Book was created, an official investigation of the US military on UFOs, which analyzed more than 12,000 cases reported between 1947 and 1969. The project concluded that there was no evidence that UFOs posed a threat to security national nor that they were of extraterrestrial origin.
๐ In 1973, another peak of UFO sightings occurred in the United States, coinciding with the oil crisis and the end of the Vietnam War. Some prominent cases were the kidnapping of two fishermen by alleged aliens in Mississippi, the mass sighting of a triangular UFO in Texas, and the close encounter of a police officer with a UFO in Ohio.
๐ In 1989, the testimony of Bob Lazar, an alleged former employee of Area 51, a secret military base in Nevada, who claimed to have worked on the study and reverse engineering of alien spacecraft recovered by the US government, was released. His story generated great interest and controversy, but his credibility could never be verified.
๐ In 1997, the 50th anniversary of the Roswell Incident was celebrated with a large commemoration in the city, which attracted thousands of visitors and the media. That same year, a US military report was published revealing that the alleged alien bodies found in Roswell were actually anthropomorphic dolls used in parachute experiments.
๐ In 2004, two US Navy pilots recorded with their infrared camera a strange flying object in the shape of a "tic tac" that moved at high speed and performed impossible maneuvers over the Pacific Ocean. The video was made public in 2017 by the New York Times and caused a great impact.
๐ In 2007, the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) was created, a secret Department of Defense initiative to investigate unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), the current official term for UFOs. The program was revealed in 2017 by the New York Times and confirmed by the Pentagon in 2020.
๐ In 2021, a preliminary US government report on UAPs was released, analyzing 144 cases that occurred between 2004 and 2021. The report acknowledged that the majority of cases remained unexplained and that further investigation was needed to determine the nature and origin of the observed objects.
Interest in the FANI has grown in recent years in the United States, fueled by the dissemination of videos recorded by the military and pressure from groups such as To The Stars Academy of Arts and Science, founded by former Blink-182 vocalist Tom DeLonge, which advocates further scientific investigation into the phenomenon. Experts agree that NIAPs pose a challenge to science and safety, but also caution against the need to be cautious and skeptical of unproven claims. Some point out that FANI could be the result of human error, optical illusions, atmospheric phenomena, or commercial or military drones.
However, others maintain that there is sufficient evidence to consider the extraterrestrial hypothesis as a real possibility. Among them is Luis Elizondo, former director of the Pentagon's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, who resigned in 2017 due to lack of support for his work. Elizondo has stated that FANI have "unusual flight characteristics or capabilities" that defy the laws of physics and could indicate superior intelligence.
