*Hantavirus* isn’t “new” - it’s been around for decades. The recent headlines are about an outbreak of the Andes strain on a cruise ship. 2350

What causes hantavirus

*1. Rodents are the main source*
Hantaviruses naturally infect rodents like deer mice, rats, and other small rodents. The rodents carry it without getting sick themselves. 23502ff62095

*2. Humans get it from rodent exposure*
You get infected when you come into contact with:
- *Airborne particles* from rodent urine, droppings, or saliva that you breathe in
- *Disturbed dust* when cleaning sheds, garages, boats, or closed-up buildings where rodents nested
- *Contaminated food or surfaces*
- *Bites or scratches* from an infected rodent f3a0235065c14d72

This is how most cases happen, especially in the U.S. aa97

*3. Person-to-person spread is rare*
For most strains, it doesn’t spread between people. f3a02095

The exception is the *Andes virus* strain found in South America. That strain can spread through close, prolonged human-to-human contact. That’s the strain linked to the recent cruise ship outbreak. 2ff6ba6bc766

Where it happens
Risk goes up in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces where rodents live - like warehouses, basements, seasonal cabins, barns. 2350e886

Bottom line
Cause = exposure to infected rodents or their urine/droppings/saliva. It’s not spread like COVID through casual coughing/sneezing for most strains. 07a92350

If you’re cleaning out old buildings, air out the space first, wear gloves, and avoid sweeping dry droppings. 65c1
