Two Dutch women in their early 20s were spotted hiking in Panama's heavily forested area before turning up.
The events take place in the Buquete region, located in western Panama. Buquete is a small town with a population of approximately 9 thousand people.
LAS CHICAS HOLANDESAS means Dutch girls. The people mentioned with this name are Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon.
Kris Kremers is someone who is artistically inclined and wants to do amateur acting. Lisanne has the exact opposite character. These two met part-time at a cafe and became close friends.
They wanted to go to Panama for a holiday and to learn Spanish by working. They reached Panama on March 15, 2004. They will start working voluntarily at a school to learn Spanish. However, since they arrived a week early, they wanted to spend this time exploring the surroundings.
They also very much wanted to discover a peak known as El Mirador. The mentioned region has a continental divide and to climb to the mentioned summit, follow the path specified as the Pianista Track. This track passes through a forest full of tropical bird species, breathtaking views and very dense trees called cloud forests.
After breakfast, they set off towards the summit with the dog of the house they were staying in and reached the summit at noon. From the photographs obtained, it was understood that the weather was quite good and there were no clouds. However, in the evening, the dog returned home alone and there was no news about the girls. The next day a cause for concern arose and local people searched for the girls in the forest. Despite hundreds of people constantly searching the forests and a reward of 30 thousand dollars, no trace of the two women could be found.
Approximately 10 weeks after the missing incident, Lisanne's bag was found by a local tribe member and handed over to the police. The search began again. The person who found the bag stated that he found it by the river, very close to where he worked, and that this bag had not been there before. Therefore, it was thought that the bag either came by river or someone left the bag on the new riverside. However, the bag and its contents are dry.
The phones inside the bag are working. During the search in the area, Kris's jeans shorts were found 1.5 km above where the backpack was found. During the searches carried out over the next 2 months, the bones and some belongings of 2 women were found. After all this, a murder investigation was started. When the phone records were examined, it was understood that they wanted to call emergency services 7 times between 1 and 3 April. Between 4-11 April, phones were opened only for signal control. As for Kris's phone, the pin code was tried to be entered 77 times and was entered incorrectly. The hundreds of incomprehensible photos found on Lisa's phone are confusing.
Inferences made after the photographs;
They wanted to return to the town from the summit they had climbed, but they went to the wrong road and got lost, and when they realized this, they tried to call the emergency services. It was thought that Lisanne was the one who entered the incorrect entries into Kris' phone and that Kris suffered serious injury or death. After a while, Lisanne left Kris and continued on her way and took some clue photos that could help them find Kris's body. It was also thought that Lisanne wanted to create light using the phone in the dark of the night. However, there are some questionable parts of this idea. They are visible from the town from the hill they climbed from. Therefore, it does not make sense for girls to go in the wrong direction. They may have been forced or chased by someone else. The suspect in this matter is the tour guide. The tour guide offered to host them at his home for 1 night and guide them. However, the girls did not accept the offer and went alone.
There are accusations of harassment against the tour guide. He was the first person to find the girls' remains, and the ruins of his house are located 1 km away. Another claim that strengthens the claim that the girls were victims of a murder is that there was no human oil on the girls' clothes, increasing the possibility of a murder before the bodies could decompose. However, these murder allegations are likely to be covered up due to the risk of deprivation of tourism revenues, which are the basic income of the region.
In recent years, there have been 25 near-disappearances and deaths in the region. All these have strengthened the possibility of a serial killer. In addition, remains thought to belong to three other people were found in the area where the girls' bone remains were found. However, no identification was made.
The authorities explain all these situations as the northern region of Buquete being very dangerous. However, even the locals cannot enter those areas and there have been cases of disappearances for them.
Finally, photo number 509 on the girls' cameras was deleted from the camera and could not be returned. Additionally, not all photographs obtained have been published. In order to delete the photo in the camera, the memory card must be removed from the camera and deleted via the computer. Who and where deleted the photo?
Besides all these, no skulls or large bone fragments of the girls were found. Local people also stated that there was no animal large enough to eat a skull in the forest.
As a result, the plot was closed without being clarified.
