What gives you hope daily?
Talking about Jesse, a black naval officer,who thinks that because of his color he wouldn't make it. Although having a wonderful family. He finds it difficult to trust anyone, even from his own race.
He writes his wife every week, telling her how how the war is going. Fighting against the Chinese , these men have sacrifice for their country a whole lot.
A dead stick is when the propeller of a plane stops after running low on oil. This is an instant that made Jesse realize that he can give other's a second chance by trusting them. At this moment Tom(white man)
would sacrifice himself for Jesse (a black man). This shows that humanity still haia shot to make things right!

Well, did it turn out well in the end?
For me I did say it was worth it. And of course Tom rescued him.
