How to Identify Altcoin Gems Before They Explode
Many Crypto enthusiasts are probably wondering whether this is still even a possibility. After all, the previous bull market was very much a non-event for most altcoins. However, there were several real winners in and amongst the disappointment. What's important to realize now is that a high tide no longer lifts all boats. Look at ZEC, for example, which rallied all alone when pretty much every other altcoin was trapped in sideways chop, or worse, in the downside.
In 2024 and 2025, I identified a handful of winners. The same is true of the 2020 bull market. Obviously, the gains were greater in the 2021 bull market. However, the recent altcoin picks were also significant in percentage terms. BONK went on to rally well over 50X from where I called it. Taraxa surged 25X from where I identified it. These are still meaningful gains. I also identified several memecoins.
The point is, gains are still available. However, they are fairly well hidden and require significant research. In an older article, I explain how I came to realize that Solana was destined for greatness. I picked up this particular altcoin at $0.26-$0.30 shortly after its ICO. In another older post, I elaborate on two of my biggest wins in 2021, including the positions I entered and the highs they reached.
You need a screening process. However, this process must be preceded by extensive research. These projects are not necessarily sitting in plain sight. Of course, it's a hit-and-miss process. However, with time, experience, and knowledge comes greater accuracy. Having a process has become even more imperative in 2026. You really have to buckle down and dive deep into the projects you are considering.
Final Thoughts
I continue to see the altcoin market as the only way to achieve alpha. Of course, as a trader, one can always trade BTC with leverage, which will provide similar results. However, with leverage comes significant risk; micro-caps can be equally risky, perhaps even more so. Don't give up on the altcoin market; ensure you approach it correctly.
