The awesome lists are a great place to find centralised resources.

In previous articles we took a look at some interesting GitHub repositories that might be useful for technology fans and people who like to broaden the scope of their available resources.

There is another set of GitHub resources that is extremely useful, however. Covering everything from terminal upgrades right through to OSINT and infosec resources, there’s bound to be something in there to appeal to your inner tech head.

Known as the Awesome lists, you could in fact say that they are kinda.. awesome. Let’s check it out!

Terminals Are Sexy

The spawning of WSL on Windows machines means that it’s never been easier to bring the terminal into your life, and once you’ve done that, then you’ll need to give your terminal some bling because, reasons.

Terminals are sexy gives you a heap of information about customising your terminal to your heart's content. There’s terminal Star Wars thanks to Blinkin Lights, Neofetch to help you flex your system stats, and you can even tap into your inner farmer using Cowsay.

You can also use tools like OhMyBash or OhMyZsh to create unique, fully customised terminal environments.

Awesome Honeypots

The broad array of technologies that we use in today's world means that Cybersecurity has grown into a diverse field, with lots of interesting and niche elements for people to study.

Without a doubt, one of those fields is Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI). Relying on a broad range of skills that include OSINT and other investigative techniques, threat analysts also use honeypots for both subterfuge and analysis purposes. Good (or maybe even awesome) honeypots provide a broad range of actionable data that analysts can use to find out much about who might be attacking their systems or hardware.

You don’t have to be an expert to experiment with this either. Honeypots can be a great tool for hobbyists to help up their networking game.

Awesome Radio

Perfect for readers of our Radio Hackers Publication, Awesome Radio can help you get your radio journey off to a flying start. With plenty to learn for complete newcomers, this awesome list will break down some of the barriers to entry and help you get the skills that you’ll need to learn more about the radio spectrum.

While ham radio is still an active hobby in the modern age, the real fun comes from pairing cheap, software-defined transmitters with systems like the Raspberry Pi to unlock cheap, transmit-capable systems that pack some serious punch. No longer just a way for two people to have a chat, the modern age sees digital communication across the entire spectrum.

While much of this is encrypted, there’s still plenty for curious minds to find. Study for your amateur radio licence to unlock higher transmit power levels and access to the entire spectrum.

Awesome Selfhosted

The Raspberry Pi and other single-board computers made the concept of self-hosting cool again. If you’re of the older generation, you probably remember a time when the only way to get yourself a box was to self-host. However, the evolution of “the cloud” changed all that, and now, it’s more common to spin up an instance than it is to roll something at home.

Subscription fees suck though and if you want tangible privacy upgrades it’s often better to bypass the big corporations and get it done yourself. Awesome Selfhosted has all the info you need to create a home assistant, make your own freedom box or even make chat private again using your own Matrix instance.
