The weight of lies
In a small village nestled between two great rivers, there lived a young man named Kofi. He was charming, intelligent, and had a gift for gab. People liked him, and he knew it. Kofi often found himself in situations where he had to make choices between telling the truth or spinning a tale that would get him what he wanted.
It started small. Kofi would tell his friends he'd done something cool, like catching a big fish, when really, his friend had caught it. He'd laugh it off when they found out, and they'd move on. But the habit stuck.
As Kofi grew older, his lies grew bigger. He told his parents he was studying at the library when he was actually hanging out with friends. He told his boss he was sick when he just wanted a day off. Each time, he'd justify it to himself: "It's just a little white lie," or "They'll never find out."
One day, Kofi wanted a promotion at work. He told his boss he'd handled a big project solo, when really, his colleague had done most of the work. His boss believed him and gave him the promotion. Kofi felt a rush of pride... until his colleague found out.
The colleague, Ada, was hurt and angry. She'd worked hard, and Kofi took credit. She confronted him, but Kofi denied it, saying she was just jealous. Ada left the company, and the team lost a valuable member.
Kofi's lies started piling up. He'd tell clients his product was the best, even if it wasn't the right fit. He'd promise things he couldn't deliver. People began to notice. His friends distanced themselves, his family worried, and his boss questioned his integrity.
One day, a big client came to visit. Kofi promised he'd show them an amazing product, but it wasn't ready. Panicked, he demoed a competitor's product, saying it was his own. The client found out and was furious. They pulled out of the deal, and Kofi's company lost a fortune.
The village elders called Kofi to discuss his actions. They told him, "Dishonesty is like a river. It flows easy at first, but it widens and deepens, and one day, it drowns you." Kofi realized he'd been drowning in his lies.
He apologized to Ada, to his colleagues, and to his clients. He worked hard to regain trust. It wasn't easy. Some people forgave him; others didn't. Kofi rebuilt his reputation, brick by brick, with hard work and honesty.
The weight of lies is heavy. Kofi learned that honesty isn't just about telling the truth; it's about being accountable, trustworthy, and kind. He still slips sometimes, but he owns up to it now.
