Why Labradors are the Perfect Dog Breed

Canis Lupus Familiaris

This one’s going to be controversial, I can feel it :)
Before I start, I have to admit I am not completely unbiased on the topic of selecting the man’s best friend's favorite breed. Frankly, labradors represent a fine compartment of my upbringing. I’ve been a part of several generations of these dogs, I’ve played with them, nurtured them, and saw them tear up a few carpets. Here’s what I learned about them:

Great Swimmers

Unlike other breeds, they actually have a natural predisposition to swimming. Their origins take us back to the Canadian peninsula of Labrador(hence the name). It is there that they evolved the swimming skills and the qualities they need.

  • strong legs that propel them into water
  • waterproof double coats
  • excellent stamina and speed

Easily Trained

Luckily, Labradors are known for their trainability. They are highly motivated dogs, which makes them one of the easiest breeds to teach. Labradors also love to please their owners, and this will have a significant impact during their training. Labradors like to eat, making training fun and motivating for them

Labs have an innate work ethic and intelligent temperament, which makes them easy to train. They are friendly and less aggressive compared to other dog breeds, making them great pets. Labradors are the best example of being a “man’s best friend.”

Perfect for kids

If there’s one breed you’d like your children to grow up with, it’s the labradors. These affable dogs get along well with other animals and pretty much everyone they meet, plus their short coats mean that they only really need a weekly combing to keep them clean and healthy.
The Labrador Retrievers are playful, patient, loving, protective, and reliable. While you cannot trust them not to jumble your clothes all around the yard (if given a chance), you know they’ll stand by their owner at all times.
Labradors will fit your children neatly as both the puppy and the child grow up. Due to their innate sense of responsibility and their inextricable willingness to cuddle, your children will form a powerful relationship with the family pet.

To conclude

It has been 8000 years since we domesticated the mighty wolf and transformed them into a variety of task-specific breeds. Personally, I feel strongly connected to one of the Canadian origin, the Labrador. They have been fulfilling our lives for years and will continue to do so, without a doubt.

Labradors are a lovely domesticated breed - for me though, as far as temperament, loyalty, trainability, the breed for me is the Belgian Shepherd. With a striking look (solid black) showing their origins to the Wolf, they are the most loyal breed. Happy in water, snow, sand, mud - anywhere, this is the breed for me 🐺
They might be the perfect dog breed as a pet, but the worst breed as a patient! Labradors eat absolutely everything and always end up ingesting foreign body and needing surgery!!
